The myelin sheath, a layer that surrounds and defends the nerves, gets attacked by the immune system. As a result, messages travelling along the nerves slow down or are disrupted.  

Although it is unknown exactly what triggers the immune system to behave in this manner, most experts believe that a combination of hereditary and environmental variables are at play.
